Labuschagne had scored an unbeaten fifty to help Australia to a six-wicket win over India in the 2023 World Cup Final on November 19.
Marnus Labuschange, an Australian batsman, has retired a unique piece of cricket memorabilia. The 30-year-old has given up using the cricket bat he used to defeat India in Australia’s 2023 World Cup victory. On social media, Labuschagne brought back some painful memories for Indian fans when he declared that he would be retiring the bat, which is currently broken. Against India in the World Cup final, Labuschagne had an undefeated fifty, which helped Australia win their sixth World Cup.
As Australia struggled to reach a target of 241 after Labuschagne came into the bat, he was the ideal anchor, enabling Travis Head to lead the run chase on the other side. Labuschagne finished with 58 off 110 balls, not out till the very end, while Head scored 137 in just 120 balls. He and Head put up a 192-run combination that almost ensured the Australians’ triumph.
On social media, Labuschagne posted a picture of his bat from that match. His Kookaburra bat is obviously in rough shape; a large portion of the willow in the center and bottom of the bat has broken off.
Indian supporters respond
Different Indian fans had different reactions to Labuschagne’s post.
A fan expressed regret that Labuschagne had held off on taking a hard hit until the pivotal final.
“We hate that bat and that innings Marnus, we don’t mind you playing well against Eng but why India, why against India” said a fan.
Another admirer praised the idea that even for seasoned cricket players, a bat could have such significance.
“We used to think that only people like us who play in school, club etc. keep such bats. Attachment is something like this, the favourite bat cannot be easily left behind. He is such a big player,” said another.
Labuschagne scored 362 runs in 10 innings in the 2023 Cricket World Cup.
