According to a report released in the Economic Times, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reported a huge surplus of ₹5,120 crore from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. This is a 116% increase compared to the ₹2,367 crore surplus from the previous year.
The main cause of this financial improvement was a notable increase in overall income, which increased by 78% annually to ₹11,769 crore. According to the research, the IPL 2023 season’s new television rights and sponsorship agreements were the main causes of the rise.
As per the study, a significant factor behind this financial achievement was the media rights income, which experienced a 131% surge to ₹8,744 crore from ₹3,780 crore the year before. For the 2023–2027 cycle, the BCCI landed a lucrative media rights agreement for Rs48,390 crore. Disney Star paid ₹23,575 crore for the TV rights, while Viacom18’s JioCinema paid ₹23,758 crore for the digital rights.
The article further stated that Tata Sons was paid ₹2,500 crore for the five-year IPL championship rights, and another ₹1,485 crore was earned through associate sponsorships from companies such as RuPay, MyCircle11, AngelOne, and Ceat.
According to the study, the BCCI’s financial performance was also aided by the Women’s Premier League (WPL), which made its debut in 2023 and generated a surplus of ₹377 crore. Media rights, franchise fees, and sponsorships accounted for ₹636 crore of the WPL’s revenue, while expenses totaled ₹259 crore.
The study states that the BCCI’s spending for the 2023 Indian Premier League increased by 66% to Rs6,648 crore.
Additionally, the board gave IPL teams payments of Rs4,670 crore from the central income pool—more than twice as much as was given out during the previous season. With overall revenue rising by 50% to Rs6,558 crore and expenses rising by 70% to Rs2,831 crore, the BCCI’s surplus for the fiscal year climbed by 38% to Rs3,727 crore.
