One day following the completion of the 2024 Indian Premier League, on May 27, was the formal deadline for applications to become the head coach of the men’s cricket team in India. In addition to clarifying that no Australian cricket player has been contacted for the same role, the BCCI has not disclosed the identities of those who have applied. Jay Shah, the secretary of the BCCI, said that an Indian will probably replace Rahul Dravid in his most recent remarks. According to reports, Gautam Gambhir is the most likely candidate. Rajkumar Sharma, Virat Kohli’s boyhood coach, is of a different perspective.
The great cricketer MS Dhoni’s name floated on the Dronacharya award-winning coach. It will be fascinating to watch whose names apply for this role, to start with. Whoever takes over as coach should be an Indian, in my opinion. Mahendra Singh Dhoni would be a solid choice if he declares his retirement. “He (Dhoni) has won major tournaments and played a lot of cricket,” he stated on the India News show CRICIT PREDICTA.
Dhoni hasn’t made his IPL retirement public yet. Although it was thought that the 2024 Indian Premier League would be the last, the mystique of the Chennai Super Kings has kept everyone in suspense. In fact, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanath has stated publicly that he anticipates Dhoni returning for a second season.
‘Dhoni will have respect of the dressing room’
Rajkumar Sharma stated that Dhoni will be treated with deference by the attire. He has two World Cup titles and is an experienced skipper. Big names were on the Indian squad when Dhoni took over as captain, and he did a good job of managing things, according to Sharma.
“Dhoni has played this format for a long time, therefore he will be treated with greater respect in the locker room. When Dhoni took over as captain, the squad had prominent players like Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Harbhajan Singh, Anil Kumble, Gautam Gambhir, and Yuvraj Singh. This means that the team needs someone who can plan ahead and manage the team well. Dhoni led the squad superbly in spite of this, Sharma continued.
Throughout the Indian team’s participation in the UAE 2021 T20 World Cup, Dhoni served as a mentor.
Atul Wasan, a former fast bowler for India, provided an alternative viewpoint on the function of a coach in Twenty20 cricket. “In my opinion, a mentor should take the position of a coach in T20 cricket, and a format expert should be retained. In the same way that AB de Villiers excels in Twenty20 cricket. From 1979 till 1989, the West Indies cricket team dominated the world. Is your coach to blame for it? Thanks to its coach, India won the World Cups in 1983 and 2007. I think a coach’s job description ends at getting the players from the field to the hotel. I refuse to hold the coach accountable for the team’s defeat as well as the victory. Similar to how managers exist rather than coaches in football. Similarly, a manager should oversee the team in cricket rather than a coach.”
