In order to help former India batter Anshuman Gaekwad, who is battling blood cancer in a London hospital, the BCCI has agreed to donate INR 1 lakh to his medical care.
Following appeals from Kapil Dev and Sandeep Patil to the board to support Gaekwad, the BCCI made their judgment.
“Mr Jay Shah has instructed the BCCI to release INR 1 crore with immediate effect to provide financial assistance to India’s veteran cricketer Mr Anshuman Gaekwad, who is battling cancer,” the BCCI stated in a statement.
The statement went on, “Shah has also spoken to Mr. Gaekwad’s family to take stock of the situation and extend support.” “The board is supporting Gaekwad’s family at this difficult time and will take all necessary steps to ensure Mr. Gaekwad recovers quickly.
“The BCCI will continue to monitor Mr Gaekwad’s progress and is confident that he will come out of this phase strongly.”
Gaekwad, now 71, represented India in 40 Test matches and 15 One-Day Internationals from 1975 to 1987. He later rose through the ranks to become the national team’s coach and selector.
