RCB qualification scenario: Sunrisers Hyderabad defeated by 35 runs as Faf du Plessis and his team finally ended their six-match losing record. Even if they win each of the final five games in the league stage, would RCB be able to finish in the top four?

On Thursday, April 25, 2024, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) defeated the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) team, their sole victory of the 2024 Indian Premier League. Even however, with seven losses in nine games, four points, and the second-worst net run-rate of all 10 teams (-0.721), they remain firmly at the bottom of the standings. Though it is understandable that they no longer have control over their chances of making the playoffs, RCB is technically still in the running. They can even qualify if they move up to third place in the rankings. Now tell us each scenario in detail:
1. How can RCB even make it to top four after losing so many matches?
The top two or three teams on the table will need to provide some assistance for RCB. At the moment, the Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Rajasthan Royals are dominating their respective leagues. The Royals have actually only lost one of their eight games as they sit at 14 points. Following seven and eight games, respectively, KKR and SRH have accumulated ten points. The best-case scenario for the Royals is if these three teams continue to win (aside from games against the club) and finish with 20–22 points, preventing other teams from scoring. In addition, RCB will finish in fourth place with 14 points and earn a spot in the playoffs if they win their next five games.
2. Yes, RCB can also make it to 3rd place in table
Both KKR and SRH will need to experience an abrupt slump in form in order for this to occur, winning just one of their remaining games. Simultaneously, LSG will finish at 20 points and finish in the top two with RR if they go on a winning streak of five of their last six games. In this scenario, RCB would finish in third place with 14 points if they win all five of their games. Six other clubs would then be deadlocked at 12 points. It’s interesting to note that this scenario is still feasible if KKR or SRH place in the top two, but LSG’s decline in form is essential.
3. Can RCB afford to lose one more game? Yes
Nevertheless, RCB still has a slim chance to lose one more game and still get to the postseason. Though it might appear far more challenging than the first two situations, it is theoretically feasible. In order for eight clubs to be tied at 12 points, a lot of outcomes will need to go their way. With four more wins, especially at large margins, RCB might very well finish with 12 points and make the playoffs.
