West Indies know exactly where they need to improve: while they are batting in the middle overs. They know they need to win three out of four to win a home World Cup and relive the excitement they had at Kensington Oval when they defeated USA. During that World Cup phase, they have had the lowest run-rate and average. Even though they are only averaging 123 runs per 100 balls, they are losing a wicket per 20 balls in the middle overs. Even with the assault against the USA, where they were guaranteed a victory and had to exert a lot of effort to raise their net run-rate, these figures still made them appear better than they have been.
The West Indies let the game slip away in the middle overs against England, their lone loss to date. In particular, they managed to score just 40 runs in batting-friendly circumstances from overs seven to eleven in the first half of the middle overs. They never faced a challenge when they played the United States, despite their ambition to improve during those times.
“We had trouble in that period following the powerplay when we lost to England,” Roston Chase said. “I know South Africa and the United States are two different opponents, but we spoke about it, and the lads performed it well today. We know we have the upper hand in the end, so even if there were only four overs outside of the powerplay, it should be our primary emphasis. Therefore, all we need to do is manage that powerplay with our bowling and batting, and then, as batsmen, maintain the momentum through the seven to fifteen-run window during which we terribly failed against England.”
Another situation in which Chase could be useful is in middle overs. need to be able to keep occupied and avoid starving the strike’s very effective batter. Chase laughed when asked how it felt to play on a team consisting of power hitters, saying, “Easy for me because my job is just to give them the strike and let them hit it for six.” That’s really appealing to me. I suppose this is the reason I’m scheduled for simply the boundary changeover at 4 and maintaining the strike rotation as well. Because boundary hitters typically hit boundaries, I’ve seen that they occasionally get a few dot balls in addition to their boundaries. After that, the equation is balanced.
Chase’s role will probably be limited to bowling in the middle overs and fielding at backward point, where he made a fantastic catch against the USA, if he hasn’t batted until the tenth or eleventh over. “If I see 10 overs come and I haven’t gone up there yet, I just keep my eyes on Rovman [Powell, the captain] all the time,” Chase stated. “Yes, as soon as I notice him looking at me. Yes, it’s in the team’s best interest. And the men put their all into their performance and go out there. I’m content with it.
West Indies will now probably begin with Shai Hope, who was previously tested in the Chase role throughout the competition, in Brandon King’s absence. Hope won’t be the one to falter if he bats well into the middle overs. The South African team that is now unbeaten is not the same as the one that would often stall in the midst of overs. In the last game, they really choked out England in the middle overs. If this match goes into the middle overs, don’t be shocked.
