In the Vitality County Championship Division Two match in Derby, Derbyshire defeated Glamorgan by 10 wickets, and they were finally able to enjoy a red-ball triumph at their County Ground headquarters.
On the fourth morning, they bowled the visitors out for 287, leaving them needing to score 27 to win the Championship at Derby for the first time in five years.
In fewer than seven overs, Harry Came and Luis Reece—who got the final two wickets—secured Derbyshire’s first Championship win since they defeated Worcestershire away back in July 2022.
Mason Crane and Dan Douthwaite put up 47 runs off 136 balls for the eighth wicket, forcing Glamorgan to wait until their previous captain David Lloyd broke the partnership.
Derbyshire knew going into the last day that they had to get the final three wickets against Glamorgan as soon as possible since rain was predicted. Under overcast conditions, play started with the visitors down by 25, but Crane cut the deficit in half in the second over of the morning with two fours off Zak Chappell.
With Glamorgan still behind, Derbyshire immediately grabbed the new ball, with left-arm spinner Jack Morley working in tandem with Chappell to get the wicket of Crane.
When Crane pulled a short ball to deep midwicket, Nick Potts dove and managed to get both hands on the ball, but was unable to hold it. Crane had already scored twelve runs.
Although Morley was occasionally able to spin the ball sharply, the two were still causing Derbyshire problems. Crane drove Reece to the cover boundary when Chappell was replaced, giving the visitors the advantage.
At the Racecourse End, former Lloyd seized control with his offspin, and while Crane sliced Morley for another four, the breakthrough eventually occurred. After facing 66 balls for his 28, Crane was stuck on the crease as his first ball kept extremely low and scurried into the pads of the player.
Even though Douthwaite persisted in batting with defiance, the hosts finished the innings in five balls. Before Douthwaite was bowled by another one that remained low, Reece had Fraser Sheat leg before wicket, bringing Derbyshire one wicket short of the much-needed victory.
It came when Reece won the Championship at Derby for the first time since they defeated Sussex in August 2019 by sweeping Sam Northeast for two straight fours.
