India collapsed to 208 all out, losing to Sri Lanka by 32 runs.
In the second ODI against Sri Lanka, Team India’s batting slumped to 208 all out, earning the team an unwelcome honor. Due to the defeat, India will not have won a bilateral ODI series against Sri Lanka in which at least one match has been played for the first time in 27 years. Since 1997, India has won 11 straight bilateral ODI series; however, that run will stop this time around, as India can only hope for a 1-1 series tie.
Gautam Gambhir is not off to the best possible start as the new head coach of India. In the first two ODIs, India’s batting has not performed well despite winning the T20I series 3-0.
India vs Sri Lanka second ODI: As it happened
Choosing to bat, no. 8 Dunith Wellalage and no. 9 Kamindu Mendis combined for 72 runs to help Sri Lanka rally to a total of 240. India responded by opening the score with 97 runs, led by 64 by Rohit Sharma in 44 deliveries.
Nevertheless, India’s batting collapse was spectacular as they lost six wickets in the following fifty runs, putting them at 147/6.
While Virat Kohli managed just 14 runs in 19 balls, Shivam Dube and KL Rahul were dismissed for ducks.
After coming in to bat at number five, Axar Patel attempted to begin the comeback, scoring 44 runs at the cost of balls. However, it was always going to be a difficult challenge when he was dismissed with India at 185 to 7.
Sri Lankan leg-spinner Jeffrey Vanderspray rattled the Indian batting lineup, picking up six wickets, whilst captain Charith Asalanka contributed with three.
