During Friday’s first Twenty20 International match between India and South Africa in Chennai, Richa Ghosh was injured on the pitch. After that, the 20-year-old wicketkeeper was declared out of the match, and batsman S Sajana replaced her starting with the chase.
Ghosh, who was participating in her 50th Twenty20 International, attempted a catch in the 16th over of the opening innings and then had “neck pain and dizziness,” according to a BCCI statement. Tazmin Brits earned a top edge as she flung a long ball from Pooja Vastrakar across the line. Ghosh lunged ahead, executed a forceful lunge, and extended both hands; nevertheless, the ball bounced off her gloves and struck her face.
At the end of the innings, Sajana was declared as the official replacement for Uma Chetry due to a concussion. Chetry, who was uncapped, had first come in as a substitute and kept wicket. If it had come to that, she would have been permitted to bat, but the game ended before she could, with South Africa winning by 12 runs and taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
In the second inning, Brits were also hurt; they had to be stretchered off the field due to a bruise in their right lower leg. When she left the field after the fifth over, it first felt like a cramp. This came after the South African opener, who top-scored for her team for 92 minutes in the first innings with a 56-ball 81, assisted the visitors reach 189 for 4. Brits were replaced on the pitch by Masabata Klaas.
