The Delhi Capitals of the Indian Premier League (IPL) declared on Saturday that head coach Ricky Ponting was leaving the team.
Australia’s two-time World Cup winning captain, Ponting, joined the squad in 2018 and helped them go to their first-ever final in 2021. Nevertheless, the team did not play up to par in the following years.
“Dear Ricky, we’re finding it so difficult to put this into words as you step down as our head coach. The Delhi Capitals wrote on social networking platform X, “The four things you told us about in every huddle – care, commitment, attitude, and effort – they sum up our seven summers together.”
You gave us seven summers of both hands-on and hands-off guidance so that we could improve. Certainly as athletes, but above all, as people. You’d be the first to arrive at every training session and the last to go for seven summers. You spent seven summers gnawing your fingernails till they fell out and running out of the dugout during tactical timeouts. Oh, the speeches—seven summers of your dressing room speeches! The message continued, “Seven summers of your hugs, shoulder pats, and fist pumps for us all – newbie, superstar, and everyone in between.”
