In November of this year, NDTV reported, the current chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), Greg Barclay, is expected to be replaced by Jay Shah, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
According to NDTV sources, Barclay informed Cricket Australia’s chairman Mike Baird and the ICC directors via video conference that he does not want to vie for the position a third time.
Barclay made his choice after learning that Jay Shah intended to take over for him in November. Shah has the support of the cricket boards in England and Australia, giving him the necessary votes to become the next head of the ICC.
The only two Indians that have served as the head of the ICC in the past are Jagmohan Dalmiya (1997–2000) and Sharad Pawar (2010)–2012. After formally succeeding Barclay in November, Shah—who is also the son of India’s Union Home Minister, Amit Shah—will become the third person to accomplish so.
“ICC Chair Greg Barclay informed the board that, at the expiration of his present term at the end of November, he will not seek reelection. An ICC spokeswoman informed The Age that Barclay was appointed as the independent ICC chair in November 2020 and then re-elected in 2022.
“As of August 27, 2024, current directors must submit nominations for the next chair. If more than one candidate submits a nomination, an election will take place, and the new chair’s term will begin on December 1, 2024.”
The chairman will be chosen by a simple majority of nine votes (51%) as per ICC regulations. The election will consist of sixteen ballots. In the past, the incumbent required a two-thirds majority to hold the position of chairman.
The majority of the 16 voting members hold a favorable opinion of him. Shah will serve as BCCI secretary for a more year, after which he will be required to take a three-year hiatus starting in October 2025.
A Supreme Court-approved BCCI constitution states that an office bearer may hold office for six years before having to take a three-year cooling-off period. An individual may hold office for a total of eighteen years, nine in a state association and nine in the BCCI.
Shah will have four years remaining in the BCCI if he chooses to go to the ICC with one year remaining in his secretaryship.
He will become the ICC’s youngest chairman ever at the age of 35.
