Sunrisers Hyderabad owner Kavya Maran supported the call to increase the number of player retentions for each team ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
Owner of Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kavya Maran, backed the proposal to raise the number of players each club keeps in reserve for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Maran clarified that each club has to have at least six retentions or six RTM (Right To Match) options in order to protect the nucleus of their respective squads at the IPL owners’ meeting on Wednesday at the BCCI Headquarters. It may be used as two RTMS and four retentions, as all six RTMS and all six retentions, and so on. After consulting with the player, the franchise should decide whether to implement a retention or RTM.”
“A player has frequently opted to attend the auction in the past when he believed that the retention fee was on the lower side. In some cases, several players have expressed the opinion that they ought to be the first person kept; if this isn’t the case, they have requested to be placed in the auction. In order to prevent this, we may ensure that the players are not unhappy with the retention price by offering them the option to either be retained or RTM at the market discovered price.”
“If just retentions are permitted, there’s a strong chance that teams will use side contracts to pay their kept players more than the retention value. However, with RTMs, a player receives the market price at the auction within the purse’s limitations, guaranteeing that the purse—rather than the franchise’s bank account—determines and limits the purchasing power of every franchise. Additionally, she said, it will uphold the integrity and guarantee openness for a brand as prominent as the IPL.
During the meeting, the owner of SRH also stated that, barring a catastrophic accident, any cricket player who is selected in the auction but does not show up for the tournament should be disqualified.
“After being selected in the auction, if a player doesn’t come to play the season for any reason apart from injury, he should be banned,” she stated.
