Chelsea defeated Wolves 6-2 to earn Enzo Maresca his first Premier League victory as Blues manager. Meanwhile, Newcastle salvaged a contentious 1-1 draw against Bournemouth on Sunday. Noni Madueke scored a hat-trick for Chelsea.
In his first match after moving from Leicester to take Mauricio Pochettino’s place over the offseason, Maresca lost 2-0 to Manchester City this past weekend.
Chelsea’s play-off win against Servette on Thursday was their first victory under manager Maresca in the UEFA Conference League, but that understated triumph was only the beginning of their goal-scoring rampage at Molineux.
After just 98 seconds, Matheus Cunha could only flick his attempted clearing from a corner towards Nicolas Jackson, who was left unmarked to head in from six yards, giving Maresca’s team the perfect start.
Jackson’s goal enraged Wolves supporters, who were already furious with Chelsea following Madueke’s posting and subsequent removal of a negative evaluation of Wolverhampton a few hours prior to kickoff.
In the message, Madueke disclosed his location as Wolverhampton with the words “this place is s**t”.
Later on, he revealed: “Damn, incorrect Instagram account. All of you move too quickly.”
After scoring a hat-trick at Stamford Bridge the previous season, Cunha tortured the Blues once more, bringing the hosts level in the 27th minute.
Rayan Ait-Nouri raced forward, teeing up Cunha, whose ferocious strike flew past Robert Sanchez and prompted a samba-dancing goal celebration. Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo recklessly lost control.
