RTM is a rule through which teams can automatically get the player which represented them in the previous season if they match the highest bid placed by a franchise. “Nothing More Unfair”: R Ashwin Critical Take On Return Of IPL Auction Rule.
The Right to Match (RTM) clause, which may reappear during this year’s auctions for the Indian Premier League (IPL) next year, was criticized by Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. At the conclusion of this year is when the IPL 2025 auction will take place. Before creating the IPL player regulations, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) held a “constructive dialogue” on a number of topics with the ten league club owners earlier in August.
Prior to the meeting, ESPNcricinfo revealed that the main topics of conversation included the following: a cap on the total number of retentions; a return of the right-to-match (RTM) card option at auctions; the availability and scarcity of overseas players; and a mega auction every five years as opposed to the current three.
RTM is a regulation that allows clubs, if their bid matches the highest amount made by a franchise, to immediately acquire the player who played for them the previous season. Teams have previously exploited this method to acquire some great players; however, it was eliminated in the 2021 mega auction to provide a larger selection of players for the then-new Gujarat Titans (GT) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) teams.
Speaking about the rule on his YouTube channel, Ashwin claimed that it does not provide a player a fair value and is unjust to them.
“RTM is the most unjust regulation for a player. Since how effective has the RTM rule been thus far? One participant is named X, for instance. He plays for a squad that we’ll name the Sunrisers. At now, his worth is around Rs. 56 crores. He’s entered the bidding process. Let’s assume Sunrisers wish to repurchase the player. Thus, at a base price of two crore, the Sunrisers will make an offer for the player “stated.”
“Then, let’s imagine that the Mumbai Indians and KKR are vying for the player’s services. Eventually, they declare, “The player is sold to the Mumbai Indians for 6 crores,” after raising the price to 6 crores. The Sunrisers will thus make an offer of six crores to acquire the player after RTM. The fact that Sunrisers are content is the issue here. Yet, MI and KKR are not satisfied. Sunrisers are the only ones (party) who are content. Since they first offered attendance bids at base pricing,” he continued.
The expert spinner claimed that RTM is unjust as it does not provide the player with a fair value.
There is absolutely no fair value after that. A bidder is present. The Mumbai Indians and KKR are engaged in combat. It has increased to six crores for one of the teams. What is said by SRH? “I take it you purchased the player?” Give the player their back.
Extremely unjust. Because SRH must now bid Rs. 6.20 crores and the other team Rs. 6.40 crores in order to acquire the player at fair market value. The unfair value that RTM provides to the player is the issue. The players will thus only leave essentially empty-handed if you grant three RTMs [to each team]. They already don’t receive fair value at the sale,” he said in closing.
