India’s eight-wicket win over Ireland in their T20 World Cup 2024 opener got soured a bit as captain Rohit Sharma trudged off the field mid-way during batting.
India’s eight-wicket victory against Ireland in their opening T20 World Cup 2024 match on Wednesday took a turn for the worst as skipper Rohit Sharma hobbled off the field in the middle of the batting innings. At the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York, Rohit got hurt on the upper arm by a ball bowled by bowler Josh Little and had to leave the field. With the aid of four fours and three sixes, Rohit smashed 52 off 37 balls before limping out injured. This gave India a great starting point to chase down a meager goal of 97.
On the second ball of the ninth over, Rohit was struck on the upper arm. After the last ball of the tenth over, the injury finally caused him to leave the field.
Rishabh Pant also suffered an elbow injury later in India’s innings, on the first ball of the eleventh over. Josh Little also bowled that delivery. But Pant, after getting some treatment from the physiotherapist, carried on with his innings and hit a six to end the game.
The outfield at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, where the India vs. Ireland match was played, was also subjected to harsh criticism due to its incredibly sluggish pace. The surface was criticized heavily for its severe bounce.
“I also said it at the throw. Not sure what to anticipate from the pitch. I have no idea how to play on a pitch that is only five months old. Even when we batted second, I don’t think the wicket calmed down,” Rohit remarked.
“The bowlers had enough of it. That’s about all that’s required of you. Aim to regularly hit those distances. These individuals have all participated in several Test matches. The only other man who hasn’t is Arshdeep. He went on, “His two wickets up front set the tone for us.”
On June 9, India and Pakistan will play at the same location.
To be honest, I have no idea what to anticipate from the pitch. We will be ready as though these circumstances will exist (for Pakistan game). This is going to be the sort of game where everyone of the eleven of us has to pitch in. The captain of India said, “It was rough, but it was nice to spend some time in the center and see what sort of shots to play there.
