Suryakumar Yadav, the new T20 captain, aims to play in all formats for India. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar confirmed Surya is currently considered only for T20s, with no ODI inclusion despite recent performances.
With Gautam Gambhir taking over as Men in Blue’s head coach and Suryakumar Yadav taking over as the team’s T20 captain beginning with the Sri Lanka series, a new era in Indian cricket began. In ODI and Test cricket, Surya is leading the squad despite being out of favour with the selectors. However, the batsman has stated that he intends to represent India in all three formats of the game.
In a recent interview with The Times of India, Suryakumar expressed his desire to represent his nation in all three game forms while confirming his participation in the one-match Buchi Babu Invitational multi-day competition.
“I want to play for India in all three formats,” declared Surya. I’ll have excellent preparation for this season’s red ball events by playing in Buchi Babu.”
Notably, Suryakumar was not even considered for a berth during the just finished ODI series against Sri Lanka, according to head selector Ajit Agarkar of India, who said that the team was currently considering Surya as a T20 player.
“No, we haven’t discussed Surya (for ODIs) at this point,” Agarkar stated at a news conference held in front of the Sri Lanka series. KL (Rahul) and Shreyas (Iyer) are back. They’ve have fantastic ODI World Cups. Pant, Rishabh, is also back. Thus, through that intermediate order, there is some true quality.
Surya was last included in the Indian ODI team for the ODI World Cup last year, but the selectors swiftly lost faith in him after his lackluster showing at the major tournament. The 33-year-old batsman made his debut against Australia at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in 2023, the only Test match he has played thus far.
