gentle in speech The senior national men’s football team’s head coach is now the 55-year-old Spaniard Manolo Marquez, whose impeccable ability to manage his limited resources to extract the best became the buzz of Indian sport. He will, meanwhile, continue to coach the national team in addition to FC Goa of the Indian Super League. In an interview that was posted on the All India Football Federation (AIFF) website, Marquez discussed the importance of “coach education” globally and the AIFF’s efforts to develop competent coaches across the nation.
“Coach education is vital not just in India but around the world. Licences are essential, and you must obtain them. You won’t, however, become a better coach as a result. Even if they might not be licensed, someone could still know more about football, Marquez said.
The Blue Tigers will play Syria and Mauritius in September in the Intercontinental Cup in Hyderabad to start their tenure under Marquez.
During his four years in India, Marquez claimed to have seen an improvement in the caliber of Indian trainers.
“In the four seasons I’ve been here, I’ve witnessed the caliber of Indian coaches rise with each passing year. There were two Indian head coaches in the previous season: Khalid Jamil of Jamshedpur FC and Thangboi Singto of Hyderabad FC. Prior to that, Clifford (Miranda) won the Super Cup with Odisha FC,” Marquez stated.
Over the last four years, I’ve also seen a number of great Indian assistant coaches. As of right now, Gouramangi Singh, a former India international himself, is my amazing assistant coach.
“In the national team, I will also be working with Mahesh Gawali, another good coach who was an excellent player for the national team a few years ago,” he stated.
The Spaniard believes that having an Indian head coach for the national team should be the goal in the coming years.
“It’s for the clubs as well as the national team. In the next years, every Indian assistant coach at the clubs ought to aspire to take the helm as head coach.
“Maybe they can also start with being the head coach of the U-17 or U-19 teams before moving on to take charge of the senior teams,” Marquez stated.
