In a Twenty20 international in Houston on Tuesday, the United States stunned Bangladesh by winning by five wickets, giving them a much-needed lift ahead of the T20 World Cup in July.
The three-match series against Bangladesh is the primary warm-up for the USA, who will co-host the tournament’s group stage matches alongside the West Indies.
The Americans played better than their more seasoned opponents, who are rated ninth, even though they are placed 19th in the international T20 rankings, below Nepal and Oman.
Towhid Hridoy top-scored for Bangladesh with 58 runs from 47 balls as they reached 153 for 6, while off-spinner Steven Taylor claimed two wickets for nine runs in three overs.
Thanks to Corey Anderson and Harmeet Singh’s outstanding 61-run combination, the USA reached the mark with three balls remaining. With five overs remaining, the two altered the tide of the match at 94-5. Former Indian Under-19 player Singh blasted 33 off just 13 deliveries, including three sixes and two fours, while former New Zealand international Anderson scored 34 off 25 balls with two sixes.
After hitting a six off the penultimate ball of the 19th over, Anderson had to knock nine off the final six balls. Singh then sent the following ball over extra-cover for four to seal the victory after Anderson had already hammered Mahmudullah for another six and a single.
Singh remarked, “It’s an amazing feeling.” “I was supporting myself, and the objective of the game was to play through to the very end. In the last over, it all came down to our best efforts, and I believe that was the goal,” he stated.
“Corey undoubtedly contributes a wealth of expertise. He participated in several major competitions and events. We all look up to him because he understands how to win games, maintain composure under duress, and play through the last ball,” he remarked.
The series’ second game is set to take place in Houston on Thursday.
