The younger brother of Rehan Ahmed, Farhan Ahmed, is an offspinner for the England Under-19 team. He just signed his first professional contract with Nottinghamshire, a three-and-a-half year agreement.
After Freddie McCann joined the playing staff in November, Farhan, 16, is the second Academy product to earn a professional contract with the team. Farhan has made a number of appearances for the club’s Second XI throughout the last two seasons in between his academic studies.
“There’s no denying that this is an exciting moment for Farhan and the team,” Nottinghamshire’s head coach Peter Moores said. “He is a player with immense skill and a promising future in the sport. However, he is a realistic person, and he understands that in order to reach his full potential in the coming years, effort must be done today.
“He’s focused on forging his own path in the game, and he’ll have our full support as he begins to do that.”
Similar to his older brother Rehan, who at the age of 18 years and 126 days became England’s youngest Test debutant when he played in Karachi in December 2022, Farhan was just 15 years old when he made his debut for the national team at the Under-19 World Cup in South Africa in January.
“I’m obviously very happy and excited to have signed this contract – it is something I’ve been working towards since I started playing cricket,” Farhan said. It’s also a dream come true because it’s for my home county. The club has a well-established history, and I am excited to join it as a member.
“I have faith that I can follow in the footsteps of past players who have progressed from the Academy to the professional staff and first-team cricket.
In the same way, I try not to look too far ahead. When I have the chance, I’ll do my hardest to seize every opportunity and maintain developing as a player in all facets in the hopes of helping Nottinghamshire win.”
Farhan took 86 wickets in 57 matches for the county’s Under-18 team before enrolling at Nottinghamshore’s academy in 2022.
The Elite Pathway Manager, Matt Wood, said, “Farhan has been with us for seven years, and his talent has been obvious throughout that time.” He is a very mature bowler who is extremely smart, and his progress over the last few years has been remarkable.
“It’ll be another step up for him to play regularly with the senior squad, but his focus and attitude is second to none, and that’ll help him in that transition.”
