India’s search for a new head coach of men’s cricket is underway. However, whenever Rahul Dravid resigns following the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup, one well-known figure—MS Dhoni—is ineligible to take over as coach. The cause? All applicants must have retired from competitive play in all forms. Dhoni cannot be chosen to be the head coach since he is still playing in the Indian Premier League with the Chennai Super Kings, even though he will retire from international cricket in 2020.
As the most well-known cricket player in India, Dhoni received a good deal of support on social media for his appointment as Team India’s new coach.
This does not, however, rule out Dhoni’s possible participation with the squad. It’s crucial to keep in mind that he served as an advisor to the Indian squad in the UAE-hosted 2021 T20 World Cup. India has failed miserably in the group rounds that previous time.
Additionally, given his current form, there is no indication that Dhoni would retire after the 2024 Indian Premier League. He only had three out of eleven innings of getting removed this year while scoring at a strike rate of above 220.
Who is the front-runner to take over as India’s head coach?
The India head coach post was open for applicants till Monday. For applicants to apply, BCCI has made a public Google form available. Over three thousand applications were submitted.
According to the Indian Express, a large number of the applications were fraudulent, showing phony identities for Sachin Tendulkar, Amit Shah, the home minister, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Gautam Gambhir, the coach of the Kolkata Knight Riders, has been mentioned as a possible contender after winning the IPL for the third time lately. Ricky Ponting and Stephen Fleming have also been mentioned in rumors.
The BCCI has not yet made public the whole list of applicants, though.
