Before last weekend, Australian boxing was thriving. However, after losses to Tim Tszyu, Michael Zerafa, and Liam Wilson, emphasis is now focused on talented featherweight Skye Nicolson to turn things around.
The 28-year-old makes a significant advancement against Sarah Mahfoud at the new Fontainebleau in Las Vegas. Although the aforementioned three lost their fights last weekend, two of them in Las Vegas, Liam Paro, George Kambosos, the Moloney brothers, and Jai Opetaia still have significant fights ahead of them.
Nicolson remarked, “I like to see any Aussie do well.” “Jai has a unique skill and will accomplish some very remarkable feats in the sport. He is undoubtedly making waves right now.
Being a part of this [the Australian boxing boom] is very thrilling. We’ve had golden periods in the past, so I’m hoping it will have that cascading effect.
“With the big names in the top Australian divisions, I’m hoping that Australia will get behind the boxers and support us. I feel like boxing doesn’t get the love, recognition, and support it deserves in Australia.”
Nicolson, who is 9-0 (one knockout), has been training with instructors Eddie Lam and Bradley Skeete in Vegas for over two weeks. In her last battle, which took place in September in Dublin, she defeated Lucy Wildheart in round nine.
With more than 150 amateur battles under her belt and aspirations to become the best, she is also a student of the sport. For the vacant WBC championship, she squares up against 14-1 Denmark-based Mahfoud, who had previously faced Amanda Serrano. If she wins, she will go up against some of the boxers she looks up to.

Regarding Sandy Ryan, the Derby winner who made an impression by halting Terri Harper last month, Nicolson stated, “I think Sandy Ryan is a very special talent.” She loves to cry, but she also has that dog in her, even if her boxing IQ is really high. She is a lot of fun to watch and likes to fight. I anticipate great things from her in the 147 division.
Since I was a small child, I have been an avid follower of Katie Taylor. She is ruling a new weight class now, which is fantastic for her, especially considering that last year she lost for the first time [since it was overturned against Chantelle Cameron].
“Katie is still involved in a few significant battles. Since Alycia Baumgardner and Taylor are two of my faves, I would want to see them compete. Given that they are two of the greatest names in women’s boxing and are both highly marketable and talented, I believe it would be a major fight for women’s boxing.
