With a 7-0 thumping of Granada, Girona completed an incredible La Liga season. Artem Dovbyk grabbed back the top spot in the league’s goalscoring standings with a hat-trick on Friday. Before the game ever started, Michel’s team—who had never before qualified for the Champions League—was certain of placing third, behind champions Real Madrid and Barcelona. After Eric Garcia, a defender on loan from Barcelona, tied the score with his fifth goal of the season at the halfway point, Viktor Tsygankov’s penalty kick, together with that of his Ukrainian colleague Dovbyk, put an end to the match just before halftime.
Nine minutes into the second half, Tsygankov scored once again. Dovbyk and Cristhian Stuani then heaped further agony on Granada, who were in second place and had Manchester United loanee Facundo Pellistri sent off for two yellow cards.
Alexander Sorloth of Villarreal defeated Dovbyk in the Pichichi Trophy race last weekend, scoring four goals in a 4–4 tie with Real Madrid.
However, in the ninetieth minute, Dovbyk scored his second penalty of the game to complete his trifecta and put himself one goal ahead of Sorloth with his 24th of the La Liga season.
