Australia’s Skye Nicholson defeated Sarah Mahfoud via nearly unanimous decision last night in Las Vegas to claim the vacant WBC featherweight title. The scores showed how dominant Nicholson was; he won by lopsided scores of 100-90, 100-90, and 99-91. Nicholson, who is now 10-(1), boxed exquisitely, her jab really working for her. Throughout the latter rounds, Nicholson was grinning as Mahfoud, who is now 14-2(3), was struggling to get anything going.
Nicholson called out Amanda Serrano following her victory that resulted in her being stripped of the WBC title. Serrano had demanded to box 12-round bouts with three-minute rounds, much like male boxers, but the organization had refused to comply. Mahfoud lost a decision against Serrano, the holder of all the other major titles at the weight. Witnessing Serrano vs. Nicholson would be an intriguing match. As Serrano was judged to be “medically unfit” to compete against Nina Meinke in December, she was genuinely unable to carry out her last planned battle. It seems that Serrano injured his eye with a hair product.

Serrano, 46-2-1(30), appears to have choices for her upcoming matchup at this point. If it takes 12 three-minute rounds to make the fight happen, Nicholson has stated she will accept to box Serrano. But according to a report that aired on RTE today, Serrano will very certainly take on Katie Taylor, an old rival, next. The story states that Taylor will take on Serrano once more after an exciting bout in April 2022 that ended in a tight decision.
Taylor was able to keep her lightweight belts after the bout, and the sequel could be coming soon. According to RTE, the rematch will take place in early June at The Sphere in Las Vegas. At 140 pounds, Taylor was scheduled to box Chantelle Cameron in a rematch; however, the bout appears to be postponed for the time being. The weight at which Taylor and Serrano square off in a rematch should be intriguing.
If Taylor fights the Puerto Rican next, Nicholson—who wants to face the finest in the game—might have to wait for a match with Serrano.
