In the group stages of the 15th ASEAN football Mitsubishi Electric Cup (AFF Cup), Singapore will face Thailand, the reigning champion, and Malaysia.
The ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) announced on Tuesday, May 21, that the biannual regional championship will begin on November 23 and run until December 7. The matches will be played in a single round-robin style, home-or-away, until December 7.
The two teams Singapore faces in Group A are Timor Leste and either Brunei or Cambodia. On September 7 and 14, Brunei and Timor Leste will play a home-and-away play-off to determine who advances to the group stage.
Vietnam, who won the championship in 2008 and 2018, will want to improve on their 2022 runners-up position when they play Group B opponents Indonesia, the Philippines, Myanmar, and Laos.
Each group’s top two finishers will move on to the home-and-away semifinals, with the first leg taking place on December 10 and 11 and the second leg on December 13 and 14.
December 17 and December 21 are the dates of the finals.
The AFF Cup has been won by Singapore four times: in 1998, 2004, 2007, and 2012.
In a World Cup qualifier in March, the Lions held China to a 2-2 draw under new head coach Tsutomu Ogura, but lost 4-1 the following game to the same opponents.
